2023 V-Strom 650 Malfunction Indicator Light - FI code c72

2023 V-Strom 650 Malfunction Indicator Light - FI code c72
V-Strom 650 - Malfunction indicator light - FI for the first time

The malfunction indicator light turned on and got FI message on my 2023 V-Strom 650. I've got to return back to garage and inspect what's happening. All I am happy about is that there is no master warning indicator turned on at the same time.

After consulting the owner's manual this indication is an exhaust related problem. Probably an O2 sensor. What?! This is a brand new motorcycle, maybe it's a bad fuel. I couldn't resist so I dig more on the internet to find out what this was all about. And discovered... hey I've got the diagnostic connector. I should connect specific two pins on diagnostic connector to see a more detailed message instead of just seeing "FI" indication behind ODO meter display. I was happy to do it, but to my surprise, the diagnostic connector was red, not white, and has 6 all-wired pins, not 4 wires like the other 650 V-strom models. Now what?

I was able to find instructions for the red diagnostic connector (on YouTube), but it was for the V-strom 1050, not my model (650). Then I found a post on the Stromtrooper forums that a biker who has a 2022 v-strom 650 model also had the red connector and he connected the pins according to the instructions found for the v-strom 1050 model. Well, that was liberating, that someone had already tried it successfully. And someone else also has the RED connector on v-strom 650. I'm not alone.

Anyway, the next day I still visited the dealer (because I have a valid warranty) and they didn't have diagnostic tools at the moment. So I had to try it myself or wait for days for them to get it. I took a piece of wire and just connected two pins on diagnostic connector, according to instructions found for 1050 model. Wolla. I got c72 message, which is indication about something wrong with the clutch switch. Where is the clutch switch? (I'm a newbie for this kind of things)

I took the hand guard apart and found that the clutch switch was out of position. I checked the switch with an unimeter and it gave final and zero resistance depending on the state of the switch - just as it was expected. I put it back on location where it should be and put the hand guard back on. Also a small check which worked - the engine can't be started when in gear and without the clutch lever pulled in. Meaning again, the clutch switch is functional.

When I turned the engine, the FI indication was still present. After exploring some more there was a solution also reported by other bikers. I put the bike in dealer mode back and have to ride about 50km, then switched the engine off and on again, the indicator showed "c00" which is good indication - no more errors.

And that was it. A fix. All by myself - proudly me. And with help of other stromtroopers. It was a deserved coffee 50 kms away from home, just to let the computer learn the new state and clear FI message.

It's weird why I had to follow the 1050 manual and my model is a 650? Did Suzuki put the same computer parts/software on the 2023 650 and 1050 models? The diagnostic cable is RED with all 6-pins wired for the 2023 V-storm 650 model. It's not the case for other 650 models.

I hope this information and my experience would be useful to someone as it was for me. So, I'll leave it here.
